In 2010, I helped parents within our community to save arts, music, and PE programs in the district. At that time I made a personal goal to serve as a school board member. Over the last 3 to 4 years, I have worked to learn about our community and the challenges we face. I have made a point to seek out community leaders to develop relationships and help work towards solutions for our children.
I believe our greatest challenge is also our greatest opportunity. If we can find a way to include the broader community and engage them in the discussion about our children’s education, if we can encourage their participation and leverage their insights, if we can get their approval and blessing to make the necessary changes to move our schools into the future, then there is nothing we can’t accomplish for our children.
I have walked across many of our neighborhoods in Des Moines, from Highland Park to Gray’s Lake and from Pleasant Hill to Beaverdale. In every neighborhood I see neatly manicured lawns with towering trees, I see children playing and I see families celebrating the mild August summer. We have an incredible community. People care. We want our children to be safe and have the opportunity to get a good education. We want our children to grow up and be happy, in whatever path they choose. As parents and community leaders, we are committed to making those opportunities available.
I have talked with hundreds of people from across our great city. My faith and excitement for the future has been renewed and energized. People are eager to contribute. They just need the opportunity to do so. I look forward to making those opportunities available once elected to Des Moines School Board.
If you see me out and about; knocking on doors, hammering in yard signs, having a cup of coffee, or playing scrabble down at Amici’s, please introduce yourself and share your thoughts. I’d love to hear from you.
