These numbers are from 2012-2013, but I thought they were interesting…  Isn’t 600+ kids awfully big for an Elementary school?

The Unfortunate Truth

challengesI typically remain positive in challenging situations.  You may have noticed that many of my entries highlight what’s good about our community and our schools.  The unfortunate reality is that we face significant challenges.

I had the opportunity to attend a Challenge Event at Weeks Middle School.  It turns out, a Challenge Event is much like an intervention for middle school children.  It helps them come to terms with their problems and teaches them they are not alone.

Our children face unfathomable challenges today; drugs, gang violence, suicide, abuse, homelessness, alcoholism, hunger and neglect.  These problems follow our children into the classrooms.  And when a child is worried about their next meal or where they’re going to sleep, their education suffers.

I’m not running for school board because I want to see better math and reading scores.  I’m running for school board because I believe all children deserve a fighting chance at having a good life.  The only way we’ll be able to tackle these enormous challenges is if we come together as a community and find solutions that work and make a difference in these children’s lives.  I’m convinced that we can.

Campaigning

In 2010, I helped parents within our community to save arts, music, and PE programs in the district.  At that time I made a personal goal to serve as a school board member.  Over the last 3 to 4 years, I have worked to learn about our community and the challenges we face.  I have made a point to seek out community leaders to develop relationships and help work towards solutions for our children.

Dog ParkI believe our greatest challenge is also our greatest opportunity.  If we can find a way to include the broader community and engage them in the discussion about our children’s education, if we can encourage their participation and leverage their insights, if we can get their approval and blessing to make the necessary changes to move our schools into the future, then there is nothing we can’t accomplish for our children.

I have walked across many of our neighborhoods in Des Moines, from Highland Park to Gray’s Lake and from Pleasant Hill to Beaverdale.  In every neighborhood I see neatly manicured lawns with towering trees, I see children playing and I see families celebrating the mild August summer.  We have an incredible community.  People care.  We want our children to be safe and have the opportunity to get a good education.  We want our children to grow up and be happy, in whatever path they choose.  As parents and community leaders, we are committed to making those opportunities available.

I have talked with hundreds of people from across our great city.  My faith and excitement for the future has been renewed and energized.  People are eager to contribute.  They just need the opportunity to do so.  I look forward to making those opportunities available once elected to Des Moines School Board.

If you see me out and about; knocking on doors, hammering in yard signs, having a cup of coffee, or playing scrabble down at Amici’s, please introduce yourself and share your thoughts.  I’d love to hear from you.

Recommendation from Todd Jacobus

approvedOver the last 2 ½ years, I have come to know Shane as a very committed, professional, detail oriented communicator, who understands school finance and the issues facing our district. He is inquisitive, analytical, and I am very impressed with his ability to quickly grasp concepts, and ask thought-provoking questions. Shane is pleasant, positive, and focused. Without question, Shane has the best interests of students, the future of DMPS and our community in mind, as he pursues this opportunity. I am grateful to all who have offered to serve on the DMPS Board. I believe Mr. Shane Schulte has the skill sets to make an immediate, and very positive, impact on the Board.

Don’t forget the children…

corndogA recent article in the Des Moines Register (here) shares that the State Board of Education is concerning stricter guidelines in approving exceptions to the September 1st start date for Iowa schools.

“School districts seeking to start more than seven days before the designated date would have to prove that a later start would harm students, staff or the community.”

An unfortunate reality is that “low-income students are more adversely affected by long summer breaks” (here).  Des Moines has 2 continuous calendar schools (here) and it’s my understanding that improvement in student achievement is clear.

A friendly reminder to our State Board that decisions regarding the education of our children should prioritize the impact to educational outcomes of those children.  If there is concern that earlier start dates have a negative impact on the economy, please consider the negative impacts to the economy when our kids can’t graduate from High School.
